Scanning speed
Imaging technology
Tile based scanning has some serious advantages compared to other scanning techniques. One of them is the commercially available imaging technology. Industrial digital cameras have a very big market with several competing companies which means development is rapid. Today's digital cameras provide much higher framerate and/or higher quality and/or resolution than yesterday's and there is still much headroom for development. The Pannoramic digital slide scanners operate with these commercially available digital cameras which can be exchanged quite easily and in a matter of minutes: upgrade is really not a problem.
3DHISTECH offers two new camera options for a tremendous upgrade in speed and/or quality.
Zeiss AxioCam MRm Rev.3
This monochrome camera has a resolution of 1.4 MP with big pixel size (6.45 um x 6.45 um). This results in very high sensitivity which is essential for FL scanning. More than that, the camera has a 12 bit output which enables us to use the digital gain for even faster scanning.
The following pictures demonstrate the effect of digital gain. The slide was scanned with an AxioCam and a 20x/0.8 Plan-Apochromat objective from Zeiss. On the pictures you can see the red channel only.

As you can see the image gets a little blurred when using higher digital gain. On the other hand, we experience very low exposure times.
